SAFER

Strategic Adaptation for Emergency Resilience

Join the campaign to make adapting for climate impacts a national priority: practical, properly funded, and locally led.

Here in the UK, we aren’t prepared for growing climate chaos. We need a serious plan at a national level, to respond to local needs – protecting our homes, communities, businesses and vital public services against damage and disruption. SAFER is a campaign for climate adaptation: the work of looking ahead, getting ready, and taking care of each other as our world changes.

Are we giving up on preventing climate breakdown?

No! In fact, adapting locally can help to build support for the deeper global action needed to stop emissions at source. And when we step up in our communities, others see that they’re not alone - helping them to take action too | Read more >>
Adaptation done right doesn't just protect us from climate damage. Measures like restoring natural flood defences and growing food locally can actively help reduce emissions, and draw down carbon too! What’s more, adapting in our communities can help us to face the reality of what’s happening to our climate, together.

The story so far

Climate breakdown is no longer a future problem. It’s happening here and now, and it’s going to get worse. From flooded homes and economic shocks to failing crops and overwhelmed health services, we’re facing a future of growing disruption.

Current Government plans are nowhere near enough to protect our communities and businesses from severe climate damage. And too often, they rely on quick fixes that can cause even worse harm to the environment. It’s not enough to react to emergencies after they happen: we need proper, long-term strategies based on the threats facing our local areas. We need adaptation that restores nature and supports the fight against global warming. And we need to keep pouring love and care into our communities, so that when things get hard, we can depend on each other. Making resilience part of our culture, so no one faces climate breakdown alone.

Adaptation isn’t optional. As the climate crisis deepens, governments will be forced to act – and the choices we make will shape our society for years to come. We have the power to steer it now, if we act together. It’s already starting to happen! There are fantastic local initiatives, making adaptation a reality and building resilience in their own communities, towns and cities. Find out what they’re getting up to below.
